"There's blackness all around, not just in the sky but in the water, in my heart and in my head. There's sadness too. There's always been sadness. I ear it like a cloak. I am unable to shrug off. I'm in a rush to get it over with now. Just another couple of strides and peace will be mine."

This is one of those books that it's an amazing read but at the same time difficult to read. This is the story of Sarah and how she discovers the past of the Ambergate County Lunatic Asylum she is investigating thanks to the contents of a suitcase... the story will be told by Ellen, a nurse in the hospital and Amy a new patient, whom she will have a connection since the first moment.
The story is told between the present and the past, but the characters and the flowing prose makes the story connected perfectly through the years and with some unexpected twists that makes the book a perfect read.
Reading about the patients in the asylum it's not easy, it is something that always frightened me and made me angry, some of those centres where full of people completely sane were incarcerated for a believe, a way to act or simply because the family didn't want to take care of them.  Really, I want to believe that the mental hospitals really help patients, but after so many movies I am not sure I would ever trust to be treated in one of those centres...
This is a book which will get you hooked since the first page, an interesting story full of twists and emotions that will be the delight of all the readers!
